Soundtrack to Survival: Honoring Black Music and Mental Health

Soundtrack to Survival: Honoring Black Music and Mental Health

Written by Monielle McAllister, BA, MFT Graduate Student Intern

June marks both Black Music History Month and a continued focus on mental health awareness. For centuries, Black artists and communities have created music that not only entertains but also heals, resists, and transforms. Genres such as country, rock, gospel, blues, jazz, soul, hip-hop, house, and neo-soul emerged from the need to express, survive, and connect. These genres offered emotional release and spiritual restoration long before “mental health” became a mainstream language.

Music is more than background noise; it’s a powerful regulator of the nervous system. The right playlist can help you process big life shifts, release pent-up emotions, or gently ground yourself when your mind feels scattered.

Not sure where to start?

Try this 2-part action list:

  1. Build 3 Intentional Playlists:
  • “Regulate & Reset”: Slow, soulful tracks or instrumentals to help your body relax. Think Samara Joy, Snoh Aalegra, John Coltrane, Robert Glasper, Tems, Alex Isley, Braxton Cooks, or Cleo Sol.
  • “Life Shift Anthems”: Songs about change, growth, and resilience. Add Nina Simone, Kendrick Lamar, Lauryn Hill, Rapsody, Little Simz, SZA, Baby Tate, or J. Cole.
  • “Shout & Release”: Belt-it-out catharsis tracks to move energy through your body. Cue up Beyoncé, Kaytranada, Channel Tres, Demarkus Lewis, or Jazmine Sullivan. Find a place to sing louder or move your feet!

  1. Practice Active Listening:
  • Set aside 10-15 minutes with no distractions.
  • Choose a song from your playlist.
  • Notice what you feel physically and emotionally.
  • Let the lyrics, rhythm, or melody guide your processing or release. Processing or release can involve activities such as deep breathing, journaling, taking a walk, or any other activity of your choice.

This June, honor Black music by letting it support your healing. You don’t have to have the perfect words; sometimes, the right song says it all.
